iPM Portable

iPM Portable

Turnkey’s new iPM Portable employs a unique combination of light extinction and light scatter to analyse individual airborne particles accurately. This allows the instrument to simultaneously measure all the PM size fractions with great accuracy. Unlike fan-based samplers, iPM has a proper pump, air filter, and accurate flow controller to generate a stable sample airflow. It also generates recirculated clean air to keep its optics away from dust and dirt contamination. Its proprietary long-life pump uses an ultrasonic mechanism and is virtually noiseless.

The filter capsule is interchangeable and can be sent for material analysis of the collected dust. To remove water droplets when sampling in damp or misty conditions, the iPM portable has an optional temperature-controlled, heated inlet, making it ideal for indoor and outdoor use. The user can adjust the sample temperature set point, or if an ambient T & RH probe is fitted, the sample flow can be held at constant humidity. The iPM Portable is also pending MCERTS approval for PM2.5 and PM10 measurements.

How it Works

The IPM portable uses a laser and light detector to measure the light scattered by airborne particles to accurately analyse individual sizes and concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and TSP particles.

It uses a pump and an optional heated inlet to draw in the air samples; the heated inlet is present to avoid water ingress being misread as dust particles when being used in humid environments.

What is the iPM Portable and what does it measure?

iPM Portable is a handheld environmental monitor designed to measure airborne particulate matter such as PM1, PM2.5, PM4 (respirable), PM10, and TSP in real time. It is ideal for on-site air quality assessments, construction monitoring, and workplace exposure studies.

The device uses a combination of light scattering and light extinction (laser-based detection) to accurately measure particle size and concentration. It includes a built-in particle spectrometer capable of detecting particles from ~0.2 µm upwards, ensuring high-resolution air quality data.

Unlike low-cost fan-based sensors, the iPM Portable features:

  • Precision-controlled sampling pump with flow controller
  • Ultrasonic, ultra-quiet operation (<30 dBA)
  • Recirculated clean air system to protect optics

This ensures stable airflow and higher measurement accuracy, especially in professional environments.

Yes. It includes an optional temperature-controlled heated inlet, which removes moisture and prevents water droplets from being misinterpreted as dust. This makes it reliable for outdoor, high-humidity, and industrial conditions.

Key features include:

  • Simultaneous multi-size particle measurement (PM1–PM10 + TSP)
  • Wi-Fi connectivity with AirQ mobile app for live monitoring & tracking
  • Interchangeable filter capsule for lab analysis of collected dust
  • Portable design for short-term surveys and mobile testing

Typical applications:

    • Construction site dust monitoring
    • Indoor air quality (IAQ) studies
    • Industrial hygiene & worker exposure
  • Roadside and environmental assessments
